Monkeypox in Germany: A Comprehensive Guide

Overview

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that has been identified in Germany since May 2022. As of July 2023, around 3800 cases have been reported to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

Unlike past outbreaks, the current cases of mpox are being reported outside of Africa. In May 2022, cases began appearing in Germany and other countries worldwide.

Transmission

Mpox is primarily transmitted through close contact with an infected person or animal. The virus can spread through:

  • Direct contact with skin lesions
  • Respiratory droplets
  • Bodily fluids
  • Contaminated objects or surfaces

Symptoms

The symptoms of mpox typically appear within 5-21 days after infection and can include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Backache

  • Skin rash

Prevention

There are several steps you can take to prevent mpox:

  • Avoid contact with infected people or animals
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Use condoms during sex
  • Get vaccinated

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for mpox. However, antiviral medications can be used to reduce symptoms and shorten the course of the disease. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

Outlook

Most people with mpox recover fully within a few weeks. However, in some cases, the disease can be fatal.
