9/11 attacks: South Carolina remembers
21 years after the September 11 attacks, South Carolina remembers the victims and heroes of that tragic day.
On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, including 11 South Carolinians.
In the years since the attacks, South Carolina has worked to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11. The state has built memorials and dedicated scholarships in their names. And each year, South Carolinians come together to remember the day that changed the world.
This year, the 21st anniversary of the attacks, South Carolina will hold a number of events to commemorate the day. These events will include:
- A ceremony at the State House in Columbia
- A memorial service at the College of Charleston
- A candlelight vigil at the University of South Carolina
These events are a way for South Carolinians to come together and remember the victims and heroes of 9/11. They are also a way to show that the state is still united in the face of adversity.
